CHAPEL HILL—Julia Capellini (Apex) and Kenley Welborn (East Duplin) are the 2026 recipients of the Alford Family Golf Scholarships. Among lacrosse student-athletes, Kelan Lewis (Hough), Renee Rizvi (Seaforth), Maddie Sutton (Croatan), and Barrett Swinson (Topsail) have been named Tony Cullen Memorial Endowed Scholarship recipients.
Capellini’s high school golf achievements included an individual Southwest Wake Athletic Conference (4A) championship in the fall of 2023, when she tallied the league’s best season-long scoring average. In 2024, Capellini placed 12th in the NCHSAA 4A state meet. Welborn helped the Panthers to a fifth-place finish in this spring’s 4A state meet. Capellini and Welborn have achieved 3.5+ unweighted grade point averages (GPAs) in the Future Ready Core course of study and will continue their academic and athletic pursuits – buoyed by a one-time, $1,000 Alford Family Scholarship – at Western Carolina (Capellini) and University of Mount Olive (Welborn).
Each Cullen Memorial Endowed Scholarship recipient carries a cumulative 3.75+ unweighted GPA and has helped his/her high school team to this spring’s state quarterfinals. Each student-athlete will receive a one-time $2,500 grant-in-aid supporting their forthcoming higher education pursuits. Lewis will continue his academic and athletic pursuits at Randolph-Macon College, while Rizvi will study and compete at Ursinus College. Sutton will matriculate as a Christopher Newport University student-athlete, while Swinson is bound for the classrooms and fields at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
The Alford Family Golf Scholarships will be presented at the NCHSAA Annual Celebration on June 10 in Greensboro. Cullen Memorial Endowed Scholarship recipients will be honored later today at the Bull City All-Star Games (bearing Cullen’s name) in Durham.
2025-2026 Alford and Cullen Scholarship Winners

The Clary Medal is made possible through the generosity of the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Family Foundation and annually recognizes an outstanding male and female varsity student-athlete participating in varsity competition in at least two NCHSAA-sanctioned teams. The award is based on each individual’s excellence in athletic participation, extra-curricular activities, and community service, exhibiting a desire to excel in all areas of life – athletics, education, sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, honesty, and integrity. The Wilburn Clary Medal was first awarded in 2006 and is dedicated to Wilburn Clary. Clary’s athletic career involved coaching, officiating, and administration. He coached several sports at the Methodist Children’s Home for almost 30 years, was an outstanding high school and collegiate official, and served as the executive secretary of the Western North Carolina High School Activities Association from 1949 until 1977 when the organization merged with the NCHSAA.
